My grandpa started the South Oakleigh Bowling Club in Melbourne. After church every Sunday Jack and a few the boys would get together in a backyard shed and drink beer while the wives prepared lunch, and this is where the idea was born. They all chipped in some money and bought some land and had it cleared and built a green and a clubhouse on it. There is still a room at the South Oakleigh club that is named after my grandpa “Jack May”

Times have changed, and now these clubs are a dying breed. Unfortunately the popularity of lawn bowls is down, due to an aging population and combined with the increased land value a lot of the clubs are being sold off one by one.
